According to some of Ranken's papers he describes this painting as "On the Lawn at Dalswinton (red hammock).  The three ladies shown on the painting are his sisters, Janett Mary Fernie Ranken (in the hammock - she later married the actor Ernest Thesiger), Anne Margaret MacDonald Ranken (sat on the left - she later married Lewis Bruce who was the grandson of James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin and 12th Earl of Kincardin), and Dora Witherington Ranken (sat on the right - she never married).
