Auld Mare Maggie was shown at the Royal Academy in 1870.  The view suggests a setting above Gatehouse of Fleet with Cardoness Castle in the middle distance with Wigtown Bay beyond.  The auld mare is being fed by Sandy Inglis, the retired farmer who is the main subject in 14 of John Faed's works, see for instance Battle of Blenheim.  He also appears in the Wappenschaw.  Sandy, who lived at Nelson Square, Gatehouse, across the field from Ardmore, would wait anxiously for the artist's retrn to Gatehouse each summer to sit again for John Faed. The buildings are very similar to those seen in the Soldier's Return
