Sir William Jardine was the first president of the Dumfriesshire and Galloway Natural History and Antiquarian Society.  In a manuscript volume of proceedings and other papers relating to the period 1862 to 1866 there are two drawings by Sir William showing members of the society on a field trip to Newbie near Annan in September 1865 to examine the site of some burial cists, which had been exposed by erosion.  Further information on the manuscript, the drawings and the field trip are contained in an article by James Williams entitled Notes on Coastal Erosion and Mid 19th Century Antiquaries at Newbie Shore, Annan, published in Volume LXXVII of the transactions of the society.

The discoveries made by the society and by others in due course raised great interest among artists such as the young E A Hornel and it was this interest, which inspired Hornel and Henry to incorporate archaelogical finds in their joint work The Druids, Bringing in the Mistletoe and also in Hornel's Brownie of Blednoch.
