Robert Colquhoun and Robert MacBryde settled at 77 Bedford Gardens in London in August 1942.  The following year they were joined in the same building by Jankel Adler, who had come to London from Kirkcudbright.  Adler had a profound influence on Colquhoun's work, encouraging him to paint from imagination and memory.  Adler also introduced Colquhoun to mono printing.  It was at this period that Colquhoun was at the peak of his artistic powers living in an artistic community which was also associated with John Minton, Michael Ayrton, Lucien Freud and Dylan Thomas.
