After Cambridge, studied under Sir Frank Short.  Nephew of Chales Martin Hardie also spent much time in the studio of another uncle John Pettie.

Joined the staff of the V and A in 1898 becoming its Keeper of Painting and Engraving 1921-1935.  Although living most of the time and working in England, he retained strong links with Scotland and the Scottish tradition.  Wrote the definitive three volume Watercolour Painting in Britain, published posthumously in 1968. CBE 1935.
