Born in Kirkcaldy and educated at the High School there. Began work as a lithographic artist before entering Edinburgh College of Art. Awarded diploma at Edinburgh College of Art, 1920. Taught at George Heriot School, Edinburgh, where he was appointed as assistant in the Art Department; subsequently Principal Art Teacher at Dumfries Academy, 1928 to 1932. Returned to Edinburgh, 1932 to become art master at Daniel Stewart's College.
