The Rev McEachern wrote: "My interest in conjuring stems from my friendship with Mudaliyar A G S Amarasekera, who was not only the leading artist in Ceylon but also a professional Conjuror, known as "The Gay Deceiver".  Early in the second world war he and his brilliant son, who had matriculated at Cambridge, were stranded in England when Cambridge suddenly closed down pro tempore.  The Mudaliyar was up to that time the only artist who had the distinction of having painted both Rabindranth Tagore and Mahatma Ghandi.  For a period they were our guests in Scotland in Kirkmabreck Manse, where they remained until he was appointed an entertainer to the troops overseas.  His fascinating little wife was Principal of the Colombo Academy of Dancing."

CVA McEachern, the Minister of Kirkmabreck, had worked in Colombo beteen 1922 and 1929.
