John MacWhirter published a number of books including the MacWhirter Sketch Book, (1906) and Landscape Painting in Watercolour (1907).

 

In January 1887 there was an exhibition at The Fine Art Society The Land of Burns and Scott, a series of sketches and pictures by J MacWhirter, ARA.  Of the 66 watercolours on display, nine were Dumfriesshire scenes.  Three of the oils were also of Dumfriesshire.
