Joanna Soden and Victoria Keller, William Gillies, Edinburgh, 1998 . The image of William Gillies is called The Calidon Show, Durisdeer. The artist was celebrated for his output, particularly in relation to that of his friend John Maxwell. The image is from the collection of the RSA which holds the copyright in the image. Notes: Landscape and still life painter in oil and watercolour. Came to Galloway with John Maxwell of Dalbeattie. Taught at Edinburgh College of Art for 40 years. Head of Painting 1946; Principal 1960. A dominant influence in Scottish twentieth century art.
His father died in 1921 while he was on a sketching trip to the Solway. He first came to Galloway with John Maxwell in 1929. His Morning Light , Kirkcudbright Farm and Near Kirkcudbright date from this period.
Was awarded the CBE in 1957, and Knighted in 1970.
