This picture, which began as a scene of the resting stone breaker, in conversation with a passing farm hand on a white horse, was cut down by the artist himself in 1923 and survives as a single figure.

Notes:

Visited Hornel and Henry in Kirkcudbright.  John Faed persuaded his father that he should abandon law for art.  The Summer House, St Mary's Isle illustrated in Bourne p96 (see bibliography).  This work sold at Christie's, Edinburgh, 23 March 1996 (Stewartry Museum file).   In his biography of Guthrie, Caw noted that his In the Orchard of 1885 was started at Cockburnspath and completed in Kirkcudbright.  In 1886 he painted a small version of The Stone Breaker and a large oblong canvas of the same subject was begun in Kirkcudbright and later cut and completed with only one figure. 1886 also saw the painting of A Village Worthy, The Summer House and The Lake, all Kirkcudbright subjects.
